Nasdara vs Chernarus and Livonia: size, climate, water, loot and PvP compared so veterans know what changes on October 15.
DayZ Nasdara vs Chernarus: Badlands Map Comparison
Quick answer: Nasdara is 267 km² of fully inland desert, against Chernarus at 230 km² and Livonia at 168 km² — the largest official DayZ terrain, arriving with DayZ Badlands on October 15, 2026 for approximately $24.99. Route-finding transfers: settlement density is officially "similar to what you are used to in Chernarus". Three routines do not — sunlight now affects character stats, surface water is almost gone, and PvP gains a vertical urban layer. Rows are source-tagged as of the Badlands pre-launch (October 2026).
- Size: 267 / 230 / 168 km² — official store wording
- Climate: "the hottest official map we've created for DayZ", and sunlight is a stat (Week 67)
- Water: little standing water, war-damaged wells, some rebuildable (Week 67 / Week 76)
- PvP: the 500 m sniper duel stays; interiors, blocks and rooftops are new (Week 73)
- Unpublished: spawn points, loot tables, coordinates, contaminated-zone positions
Size: 267 km² Against 230 km² and 168 km²

| Map | Official size | Landscape | Climate | Water |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nasdara | 267 km², fully inland | Sparse vegetation, deep valleys, ridges, mud and stone settlements | Arid spring, hottest official map | Little standing water, war-damaged wells |
| Chernarus | 230 km² | Post-Soviet landscape inspired by North Bohemia | "Less than ideal weather or poor visibility" | Wells are the standard safe source |
| Livonia | 168 km² | "Lush, dense forests" | Same low-pressure model | Same well routine |
Official source: DayZ — Steam store page — "Chernarus, a sprawling 230 km² post-Soviet landscape... This 168 km² map may seem more habitable with its lush, dense forests, but looks can be deceiving."
Official source: DayZ Badlands — Steam store page — "Explore the largest map for official DayZ – 267km² of vast, desert-themed wasteland that's located west of Chernarus and borders Takistan's western frontier."
Area math: 267 km² is 16% more than 230 km² and 59% more than 168 km². WOBO's map guide calls that a near-50% gain in usable landmass — a land-only figure, since much of Chernarus is sea. Older lists still circulate 225 km² and 163 km²; this page uses the current store numbers.
Week 63 explains the 267: arid landscapes are vast, and a land-locked map needs an edge transition — buried roads, broken bridges, landslides — which also fixes the map-boundary confusion it criticises in Livonia. Region detail: Nasdara Map Overview and Nasdara Map Size, Regions & Key Landmarks.
Climate: Sunlight Hits Your Stats
Official source: DayZ Badlands | Dev Blog (Week 67) — "Chernarus and Livonia do not ask much of you as a player when it comes to movement around the map... On Nasdara, there are many more factors that will influence your travels across the map."
| Pressure | Chernarus / Livonia | Nasdara (official) |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | No sunlight mechanic | Direct sunlight impacts character stats; cover, shade and clothing become survival actions |
| Temperature | "Less than ideal weather" | Severe day-to-night swings, but no freezing |
| Clothing | Cosmetic plus durability | Goggles, shemaghs, dust masks and face wraps protect eyes and airways |
| Season | Autumn/summer cycle | First spring season in any DayZ terrain |
| Travel cost | Low | Strategic decisions based on state and resources |
Your "run it, deal with it" travel style is priced differently here, and cosmetic slots are loadout slots. Mechanics are on Heat & Heatstroke Survival Guide.
Water: The Routine That Breaks First
Week 67 is blunt: old maps gave you water by "simply finding a well", Nasdara has "very little standing water", so you must explore and work harder to stay sustained — and dehydration escalates "starting with sweating and ending with death". The store page adds why: common wells did not survive the war.
| Water question | Chernarus / Livonia | Nasdara |
|---|---|---|
| Surface water | Streams and coastal access are routine | Very few standing water bodies |
| Wells | Default safe source | Many destroyed; some rebuildable, one needing another player's labour (Week 76) |
| Failure curve | Thirst drains, then damage | Officially sweating first, death last |

Loot: 1.29 Already Changed Chernarus
Update 1.29 "Road to Badlands" (stable 2026-07-15) rewired loot on the maps you play today:
| 1.29 change (official) | What it means on Chernarus/Livonia |
|---|---|
| Central economy shifts meant to slow gameplay | Early looting decisions matter more than speed |
| Firearms placed "with more intent"; you work with what you find | Less pick-and-choose at military hotspots |
| Farm-exclusive weapons; vests and helmets rarer | Rural loot gained value, protection became a decision |
| NBC items outside medical centres, fire stations, high-tier military | Contamination runs need wider searching |
| Nasdara convoy wrecks added to both old maps | You already meet Nasdara's identity |
Official source: DayZ | 1.29 Road to Badlands Stable Update - Out Now — "Rather than having a choice of firearms, players might have to work with what they find. Other gear, like vests and helmets, has also been made rarer to reflect this change."
Nasdara's loot identity is confirmed at landmark level only: Soviet-era military bases, oil drills and refineries, dense Middle Eastern-style cities, highways. The October 2 price announcement adds "new regional firearms, clothing, and loot" for October 15, plus sandstorms, rebuilding, motorcycles and radio/Morse gameplay.
Base names, loot tiers, spawn counts and coordinates are not published as of the Badlands pre-launch (October 2026) and arrive at launch on October 15, 2026. Hunting grounds: Military Bases & Bunkers, Oil Fields & Refinery and Cities, Bazaars & Loot Routes.
PvP: Sniping Stays, the Close Fight Is New
Dev Blog Week 73 opens on the familiar 500 m shot, then adds what's new:
- Points of interest are dense: farmland housing, small settlements, villages and cities, with tight CQB, interior focus, multi-storey apartments and rooftop access.
- Cover changes type: less vegetation than other maps, but bush cover remains, plus walls, fences and the dried-up Sefid-Darya and Siyah-Darya riverbeds as protected routes.
- Verticality is designed in: blocks reach higher than before, and the official answer to campers is that taller structures sit nearby.

Base-game terrain: the fight veterans know; Nasdara swaps that concealment for rubble, walls and alleys.
Week 63 confirms settlement density similar to Chernarus, so route planning transfers. Vegetation discipline doesn't: on Chernarus you read tree lines, on Nasdara you read walls, rooftops and alley exits.
Bush-line crossings, hill-top overwatch and coastal camping stay valid, but the new threat axis is vertical and enclosed — assume a rooftop and a back alley exist behind every street fight.
What Carries Over From the Base Game
| Feature | Availability | Tier |
|---|---|---|
| Motorbikes (Jana moped, enduro) | All maps with 1.30, fewer spawns outside Nasdara | Official |
| Code locks | All maps with 1.30 (Recap 1, 2026-07-31) | Official |
| Convoy wrecks, desert camo, SCR-17, female infected soldier | Live on both old maps since 1.29 (2026-07-15) | Official |
| 150+ reworked icons, infected attack animation rework | Ship with 1.30 on October 15, 2026 | Official |
| Sandstorms, radio/Morse shelters, wildlife, terrain-hole facilities | Confirmed for launch, values unpublished | Official |
As of the Badlands pre-launch (October 2026), Bohemia has not published spawn tables, heat damage values, sandstorm duration, contaminated-zone coordinates or achievement lists. Creator footage stays embargoed until the morning of October 15, 2026, so exact figures circulating before that are speculation.
Patch-level detail lives in DayZ Update 1.30 Patch Notes, Motorbikes in DayZ 1.30, Codelocks in DayZ and DayZ Badlands Rebuilding System Explained.
Which Map Should Veterans Queue First?
| If your habit is... | Start on | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Coastal spawns, slow loot walks, tree-line fights | Chernarus | Sunlight, water and cover never change; 1.29 economy shifts are the only shake-up |
| Forest stealth and short-range ambushes | Livonia | Same low environmental pressure, denser foliage |
| Long-range marksmanship plus urban CQB | Nasdara | Both formats are official design targets, 19% more area than Chernarus |
| Base-building experimentation | Nasdara | Over 5,000 rebuildable houses, roughly 20 broken-house variants |
| Testing update content without buying day one | Chernarus/Livonia | Motorbikes, code locks and 1.29 items arrive free with Update 1.30 |
Verdict: Nasdara is not Chernarus with sand. It keeps the settlement density you know and swaps the pressure system underneath — ignore hydration and shade and the map kills you first. Pricing sits on DayZ Badlands Release Date, Price & Platforms, the purchase call on Is DayZ Badlands Worth It?.
FAQ
Is Nasdara bigger than Chernarus? Yes. Nasdara is 267 km² and fully inland; the current Steam store text lists Chernarus at 230 km² and Livonia at 168 km² — roughly 16% more raw area than Chernarus.
Does Nasdara replace Chernarus? No. Chernarus and Livonia stay in the base game; Badlands adds a third terrain, and Update 1.30 updates the old maps with motorbikes, code locks, icons and the infected animation rework.
Is Nasdara harder than Chernarus for experienced players? Environmentally yes, navigationally no. Settlement density matches Chernarus, but sunlight hits character stats, standing water is rare and vegetation cover is thinner. Heat and thirst will kill you before gunfights do.
When can I compare them myself? October 15, 2026, alongside Update 1.30, at approximately $24.99 with regional pricing and no pre-order. Until then, only official announcements and 1.30 Experimental (live since September 16, 2026) are reliable.
