DayZ Badlands lore: Nasdara is not an Arma 2 Takistan remake but a new 267 km² province with a confirmed history, factions and bilingual signs.
DayZ Badlands Lore: Nasdara, Takistan and the Factions Left Behind
No, DayZ Badlands is not a remake of the Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead map. Nasdara Province is a brand-new 267 km² terrain inside a rebuilt Takistan, and its official history runs in one line: squeezed between the British and Russian empires, annexed by the USSR, ruled by a dictatorship, taken down by western coalition forces, then torn up by militants fighting PMCs and each other until the infection knocked everyone down. Every claim below comes from an official Steam dev blog or store page, as of the Badlands pre-launch (October 2026).
Is DayZ Badlands Just Takistan Again?
Takistan is a name DayZ players know from Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead, which is why the comparison keeps coming up. The Week 63 dev blog — the first Badlands dev blog, April 15, 2026, by Creative Lead Adam — answers it: Nasdara "is part of a much bigger country some players may recognize — Takistan," and while it "firmly sits within the terrain of Takistan, this isn't the Takistan you may know from Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead, but a brand new one."
| Question | Official answer |
|---|---|
| Same country as Arma 2? | Yes — the province sits inside Takistan |
| Same map as Arma 2? | No — a brand new terrain built for DayZ |
| Why put it in Takistan? | Narrative background, plus neighbouring Chernarus for familiarity |
| Size and climate | 267 km², largest official DayZ terrain, arid, with a spring season |
| Inspiration | Central Asia (Afghanistan), the Middle East (Iran, Turkey), plus the Arma 2 art team's earlier work |

The setting was chosen to carry story: inside Takistan the team gets "a solid background to build the environment's storytelling on," while Chernarus "offers a familiarity that otherwise wouldn't be possible." Terrain detail lives on the Nasdara map overview and the Nasdara versus Chernarus comparison.
The Province History, in the Order Week 63 Gives It
Week 63 gives the whole political history of the province in one sentence, parsed into a sequence:
| Stage | What happened | Who was acting |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Imperial squeeze | "Stuck between British and Russian empires" | British and Russian empires |
| 2. Annexation | "Annexed by the USSR" | Soviet Union |
| 3. Strongman rule | "Ruled by a dictatorship" | Domestic regime, unnamed |
| 4. Coalition intervention | "Taken down by western coalition forces" | Western coalition, unnamed |
| 5. Proxy-war aftermath | "Years of various militant groups fighting PMCs and each other" | Militant groups, PMCs |
| 6. The reset | "The infection knocked everyone down" | The DayZ outbreak |
Week 63 attaches no dates to any of these stages and names no leaders, battles or treaty — a page giving you the year of annexation is filling a blank the studio never published. As of the Badlands pre-launch (October 2026), that order is the whole official timeline. The store page restates it: Nasdara was "ravaged by endless warfare even before the outbreak of infected," where players "walk through the ruins of constant proxy wars between global superpowers."

Where the Province Sits
Two official sources describe the borders differently. The store page says the wasteland "borders Takistan's western frontier" and sits "west of Chernarus"; the Week 63 dev blog says the province "is part of" Takistan, "located at the western border with Ardistan." The dev blog is the more specific: Nasdara is inside Takistan, on its western edge where Ardistan begins, with the Dasht-e Sarman desert pressing from the east, border mountains splitting the countries west, greenery clinging to the Sefid Darya and Siyah Darya watercourses, and a highway across the southern section reaching the Dar-e Ardis border crossing.

Faction Traces the Official Sources Actually Name
No faction system exists yet, as of the Badlands pre-launch (October 2026) — but official material names a trail of actors:
| Actor | What official material says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Western coalition forces | Took down the dictatorship | Week 63 dev blog |
| Private military contractors | Fought militant groups and each other after the intervention | Week 63 dev blog |
| Militant groups | Same period of infighting; the studio sells a "rebel tribes flag" lore patch | Week 63 + Vinyl announcement |
| ION PMC Group | Named on a lore patch; box includes a "foldout ION PMC travel chart of Nasdara Province" and an "ION Contractors" manifest | Collector's Vinyl Box Set, October 9, 2026 |
| Nasdara police | Named on a lore patch; art team built the uniform and police badge design | Vinyl + Week 70 dev blog |
| Soviet-era garrison | "Derelict Soviet installations" across the map | Week 63 dev blog |
| Oil industry actors | "Signs of a careless oil industry"; store page adds drills and refineries | Week 63 + store page |

ION is the most concrete faction name so far, and it arrived outside the dev blogs: the $140 Collector's Vinyl Box Set lists three lore-based patches as Nasdara police, ION PMC Group and rebel tribes flag. Merchandise is a weaker source than a dev blog — treat ION as named-but-unexplained, since nothing official says whether ION contractors spawn, guard objectives or exist only as flavour text.
As of the Badlands pre-launch (October 2026) there is no published faction roster, reputation system, quest line, NPC dialogue or achievement list. If a page hands you one, it is inventing it. Re-check everything at launch on October 15, 2026.
The Bilingual Clues on the Signs
Week 63 spends a paragraph on language: "The Takistani population speaks Persian (Farsi)," an added complexity for most of the playerbase, so the team "integrated a multilingual approach that includes both English and Farsi for any important navigational signs."
Official source: DayZ Badlands | Dev Blog (Week 70) | Wishlist now!
- Important navigation is bilingual. Signs that matter for finding your way carry English alongside Farsi.
- Place names are Persian-language. Dasht-e Sarman, Sefid Darya, Siyah Darya, Dar-e Ardis and Sadd-e Marek match the language the blog names — an observation, not an official translation.
- Authority was fictionalised. The art team's police badge design stayed "official, but fictional enough to belong to Nasdara" (Week 70).
The same method covered hardware: Week 70 says weapon research "started with researching the Persian Gulf region's history in weapons," reaching to the Arabic Peninsula and South Asia — how the Shamshir and Jambiya sit with the returning Lee-Enfield. See all confirmed new weapons and the clothing and gear roundup.
War Written Into the Landscape
Week 63 lists what survivors will find: "ancient ruins, leftovers of monarchies, derelict Soviet installations, wounds of recent battles, signs of a careless oil industry, and even investment projects from western countries" — the last being the highway into Ardistan at Dar-e Ardis. Those six layers map onto stages of the history table: the closest thing Badlands has to an in-world timeline.
- The store page describes Soviet-era bases that "collide with modern oil drills and refinery infrastructure," and highways "meant to bridge East and West" that now "stretch like abandoned hope across the wasteland."
- Week 63 claims 400% more new custom assets than DayZ Frostline — that is where the density comes from.
- Settlements are mostly mud, with stone houses behind tall walls of the same material, at roughly Chernarus density.
- The map edge is a buffer zone: roads buried in sand, a broken bridge, a landslide, powerlines destroyed near the border, thinning object density over the ridge.
Industry and roads sit where the wars fought: cities, bazaars and loot routes, military bases and bunkers and oil fields and refinery follow that pattern.
The Water Story Behind the Survival Systems
Week 63 ties the survival identity to the history: "the combination of a strong drought, a damaged Sadd-e Marek reservoir, and the general lack of maintenance has led to a serious lack of water within the province," pushing players to "revive some of the old ways of getting water in arid regions around the world." The store page compresses it: thirst will not be quenched "by the land, nor by the common wells that didn't survive the war."
War damage is a gameplay system, not scenery: the water and wells guide matters more here than on any previous map, heat and sun exposure changes your route, and repairing wells — confirmed in a later dev blog — ties into the rebuilding system.
What Is Not Confirmed Before Launch
Honesty section — the following have not been officially published as of the Badlands pre-launch (October 2026):
- Dates or years for any stage of the province history.
- A playable faction roster, faction quests, reputation or NPC dialogue.
- Named settlements, spawn points, coordinates, map key, loot tables, achievement lists, and the full extent of the Morse radio gameplay.
Check those at launch on October 15, 2026 — the release date, price and platforms page tracks the launch window and the Update 1.30 page tracks the patch shipping alongside the DLC.
FAQ
Is DayZ Badlands just Takistan from Arma 2 again?

Where is Nasdara located?
Land-locked inside Takistan, on its western border with Ardistan, west of Chernarus — with the Dasht-e Sarman desert to the east, border mountains to the west, and a highway crossing the south to the Dar-e Ardis border crossing.
Which factions are confirmed?
No playable faction system has been announced. The official names so far are ION PMC Group, the Nasdara police and rebel tribes, plus the historical actors of Week 63: empires, the USSR, a dictatorship, a western coalition, militants and PMCs.
