DayZ Badlands zombies are region-specific infected with a sun-bleached look and a reworked three-angle attack. Confirmed before launch on October 15.
DayZ Badlands Zombies: New Infected Variants in Nasdara
Quick answer: Yes, DayZ Badlands has zombies — DayZ just calls them infected. Bohemia Interactive confirms you will "battle region-specific infected variants, all of which have been tailored to the expansion" of Nasdara Province, and Update 1.30 reworks how they swing: infected now pick an upward, centered or downward attack based on where your head is, plus a new running heavy attack. Visually they are built to look more human, not more undead — sunburn, sweat, dry dust and torn regional uniforms instead of Chernarus mud. It all launches with the DLC on October 15, 2026.
- Confirmed variant classes: regional civilian, police and military infected, each shown as an official line-up, plus a female infected soldier variant live in the base game since 1.29.
- Confirmed attack rework: three-angle attack selection by target height plus a running heavy attack, first playable on 1.30 Experimental (September 16, 2026).
- Still unpublished as of the Badlands pre-launch (October 2026): damage numbers, attack speeds, spawn points, variant rosters and achievement lists.
Are the DayZ Badlands Zombies Actually Undead?
No, and the studio is explicit about it. In Dev Blog 3 (Week 70, June 5, 2026) the art team states the infected are "just ordinary humans who contracted an unknown disease in the initial outbreak," which is why they are "extra violent toward you, the immune few: the survivors." The stated goal for Nasdara is "to make the infected look and feel more human," and the blog names the opposite approach to reject it: the infected are not "a generic horror movie spectacle of 'undead zombies.'"
So there is no new undead lore in Badlands — no crawlers, no boss infected classes. What exists is a population that got sick, kept wearing its job, and decayed in place under a harsher climate than any DayZ map before it.

The Steam store page frames it the same way, describing Nasdara as a wasteland "ravaged by endless warfare even before the outbreak of infected." The wider backstory sits on the Nasdara lore page.

The Regional Look: Sunburn, Dust and Torn Uniforms
The Nasdara infected got a dedicated art-direction pass rather than a palette swap, organized around three pillars quoted from the dev blog:
| Pillar | What the art team says it means |
|---|---|
| Regional Influence | Every scrap of clothing should hint at who they were before the outbreak: their home, their work, their culture |
| Progression of Decay | Every visual element should tell a story of sickness, neglect and deterioration |
| Visual Storytelling | Every silhouette, texture and shape should express their story at a glance |
Underneath sits one guiding principle: subtlety. A torn uniform tells you where that person worked before everything ended, and symptoms are readable rather than decorative — bruises, vomit, cuts, sunburns and sweat, each with a logical cause behind it.
The palette is where Nasdara splits hardest from the rest of the franchise:
| Detail | Chernarus and Livonia infected | Nasdara infected |
|---|---|---|
| Ground dirt | Darker, wetter, mud-like grime | Lighter dust and dry grime |
| Skin | Wet, muddy weathering | Sweat staining, sun exposure marks, heat-related skin details |
| Clothing | Saturated post-Soviet garments | Faded fabric, regional garments for a Middle East-inspired region |
Shared resources and visual guidelines kept several artists consistent on skin treatment, dust, sweat, sun exposure marks, clothing wear and color grading. The official showcase captions name the sets directly: Regional Civilian Infected, Regional Police Infected, Regional Military Infected, plus a grouped shot captioned "Variety of Infected (Without color variants)" — implying color variants exist even though that image does not show them.

By Recap 2 on September 22, 2026, the studio said the infected had been "significantly improved" since the June showcase, and that "at times, the infected should look even more human, aside from visible bloodstains and bruises."
One infected addition already shipped to everyone: the 1.29 "Road to Badlands" stable update (July 15, 2026) introduced "the female variant of the infected soldier" alongside Nasdara convoy wrecks appearing in Chernarus and Livonia. That one is live in the base game today.

The 1.30 Attack Rework: Three Angles and a Running Heavy
The behavior change sits in Update 1.30, which went to Experimental on Steam on September 16, 2026. Bohemia's wording is precise: infected attacks "now better reflect the position of their target." Before this update, infected "consistently used downward-facing attack animations, regardless of the player's stance or relative position."
| Situation | Before 1.30 | From 1.30 onward |
|---|---|---|
| Standing, crouching or prone | Always a downward-facing swing | Attack chosen by the height of your head relative to the attacking infected: upward, centered or downward |
| Stairs, slopes, uneven ground | Same animation regardless of geometry | Swing direction follows the height difference — downhill, an infected may aim lower; attacking from below, it swings upward |
| Close pressure | Standard attack pattern | Infected can also perform a new running heavy attack |
Two consequences: the animation now reads the fight instead of ignoring it, so a prone player is no longer looking at a swing authored for a standing target; and the running heavy attack has no published timing or damage data, so treat any number quoted for it as unverified. Version context lives on the 1.30 patch notes page.

The same announcement warns that the animation work is broad enough to affect animation-related mods, and that some Badlands assets are held back from Experimental until release (motorbikes were the exception). The Experimental infected roster is not the full Nasdara roster.
1.30 Experimental went live on September 16, 2026 and Badlands launches with 1.30 on October 15, 2026. Attack selection, damage, speed and spawn density can still change between those dates. Nothing on this page is a stat dump, because Bohemia has not published infected stats — only the animation design.
What Is Not Confirmed Yet
Stated plainly so nobody builds a guide on a guess:
- No spawn points, density figures or region-by-region placement for Nasdara — none published as of the Badlands pre-launch (October 2026).
- No health, damage, bleed or attack-speed values, and no confirmation that a Nasdara infected hits harder than a Chernarus one.
- No complete roster: civilian, police and military line-ups are shown, but variant totals and color-variant counts are unpublished.
- No achievement list tied to the infected, and no mechanical statement about how infected and the new dogs interact beyond lore wording.
- Nothing confirms a behavior change on existing maps; the confirmed change is the 1.30 animation rework, which arrives for the whole game.
Any precise numbers for these points from other sources are community estimates until Bohemia publishes them.
Fighting the Infected of Nasdara
Terrain still matters, differently. The old universal downward swing is what the rework replaced, so swings now track you across stairs and slopes instead of playing a fixed animation. Bohemia has not said the old behavior caused attacks to miss, so do not assume prone-on-a-slope is a safe spot — assume the swing is aimed at you.
Heat is the slower killer. Nasdara is the hottest official DayZ map and direct sunlight affects your character's attributes, so a long melee under open sky costs hydration and temperature margin at once. Plan fights around shade and water — see the heat and heatstroke guide.
Watch for dogs where infected linger. The confirmed dogs are the first territorial animal: they guard military areas, cannot be tamed, and are called "the infected's best friend" in the official dev blog — traumatized on Day Zero, they stayed loyal to their previous owners and remain close to them, primarily in packs. The plain reading is that where infected congregate, dogs may be nearby; Bohemia has published no spawn data either way. The full confirmed animal list is on the wildlife threats page.
Bring a real blade. The regional melee set includes the one-handed Shamshir-style scimitar — long-reaching, quick swing — and the Jambiya dagger, which officially carries a higher condition value than regular knives so it lasts longer between sharpening sessions. Both are confirmed in the new weapons roundup, subject to the usual loot spread across the 267 km² of Nasdara.
Trust animation behavior, art direction and named items right now. When the DLC goes live at launch on October 15, 2026, revisit the numbers: damage, spawns and variant lists come out with release patch notes, and this page will follow.
FAQ
Will DayZ Badlands have zombies? Yes. Bohemia confirms region-specific infected variants tailored to the expansion. DayZ's own term is "infected" — ordinary people who caught the disease in the initial outbreak, not undead.
Are the new zombies stronger than the Chernarus ones? Unknown. No damage, health or speed values have been published for the Nasdara infected. The confirmed differences are visual (regional clothing, dry dust, sunburn weathering) and behavioral (the 1.30 three-angle attack rework plus a running heavy attack).
What does the infected attack rework in 1.30 actually change? Infected select between upward, centered and downward attacks based on the height of your head relative to theirs, so swings track you standing, crouching or prone and across stairs and slopes. They also gained a new running heavy attack. First testable on 1.30 Experimental from September 16, 2026.
When can I see the new infected for myself? DayZ Badlands and Update 1.30 launch together on October 15, 2026. Some Badlands assets were held back from the Experimental build, so the full Nasdara infected roster appears at launch.
