DayZ code locks arrive with update 1.30 on October 15, 2026: V9 battery power, indestructible when attached, escalating brute-force protection.
DayZ Badlands Codelocks: Official Code Lock Rules Before October 15
Official code locks come to DayZ with update 1.30 on October 15, 2026, and they are not a Nasdara-only toy: Bohemia confirmed in Dev Blog Recap (1) that it is "bringing it along with the update, and we can also confirm that it will be available on all other maps." The rule set is small. The lock runs on a charged V9 battery, stops working and unlocks itself when that battery dies, is indestructible while attached to a door, and locks out repeated PIN guessing with escalating brute-force protection. What Bohemia has not published is the PIN length, the wrong-attempt threshold, or the lockout duration — as of the Badlands pre-launch (October 2026), those numbers exist in no official source.
- Ships with: DayZ Update 1.30, at launch on October 15, 2026 (official).
- Works on: every map, Nasdara included (official, Recap 1, 31 July 2026).
- Mounts on: new rebuildable doors and existing fences (official, Week 76).
- Power: one charged V9 battery; empty battery means an automatic unlock (official).
- Damage: only while detached; attached, it is described as indestructible (official).
- Input: controller support, so console players can use the keypad (official).
How the official lock differs from the vanilla combination lock
DayZ already has a lock. The vanilla Combination Lock is a dial item you hang on a gate, and it is a very different machine from the one shipping in 1.30.
| Feature | Vanilla Combination Lock (current) | Official code lock (1.30) |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanic | Rotating discs, dialled by hand | Keypad PIN entry |
| Combinations | Cyan cable: 3 discs × 10 digits = 1,000. Red cable: 4 discs × 10,000 | Not published |
| Power | None | One charged V9 battery |
| Wrong guesses | No published penalty (community reports) | Escalating brute-force protection |
| Durability | Irrepairable | Repairable with electronic kits |
| Loot source | Industrial and Farm areas, listed as rare | Not published |
The left column comes from the DayZ wiki entry for the Combination Lock, which also lists the item at 3×3 slots and 350 g. The right column comes from Bohemia's own dev blogs. The gap between them is the feature: on a vanilla gate, raiders dial through guesses with no in-game consequence, and one 2023 Steam forum poster claimed a four-dial lock falls in under five minutes — a community anecdote, not a measured figure, but it explains why "brute force protection" is the phrase Bohemia led with.

Bohemia is open about where the design came from. Week 76 says the community "has already done a great job modding this," calls the official item similar to that community code lock, and names the part PC mods never solved: "additional work on input handling for controllers, which makes it accessible for console players."
Power rules: the V9 battery loop
| Rule | What the official blog says |
|---|---|
| Required item | A charged V9 battery |
| Failure state | The lock stops working and automatically unlocks when battery power runs out |
| Readout | Battery state is observed on the back of the lock, indoors |
| Maintenance | "You will need to check the batteries from time to time and maintain the code lock to keep it functional" |
A dead battery is a fail-open condition: a base nobody visits becomes an unlocked base with a lock still hanging on it, and raiders only have to wait. Lock upkeep joins well repair and wall patching as a standing chore on official servers.

Not written down: how long a charge lasts, or whether the battery is consumed or swappable. Those are launch-day questions, not blog questions.
Read the back of the lock on every visit, the same way you check the well and the walls. An attached lock with a live battery is indestructible; an attached lock with a dead battery is a doorway.
Brute-force protection: exactly what is written
Bohemia's wording: the lock "has features like brute force protection, so that other players cannot repeatedly guess the PIN without any consequences. The protection period starts after a certain number of wrong PIN attempts. That's when the lock will temporarily refuse new code entries and give a warning response instead. This protection escalates with continued failed attempts, but resets after a correct PIN, after enough time has passed, or when the lock is unlocked from within."
| Reset trigger | Condition |
|---|---|
| Correct PIN | Someone enters the right code |
| Time | Enough time has passed since the last failure |
| Interior opening | The lock is unlocked from inside the building |
Still unpublished as of the Badlands pre-launch (October 2026): how many wrong attempts start protection, how severe each escalation step gets, and how long the refusal lasts. Any page giving you "five wrong tries and a 10-minute cooldown" before October 15 is inventing it. The honest answer to "can you brute force a DayZ code lock?" is that guessing is designed to stop paying, the thresholds are under wraps, and the raid path moves from the lock to the structure around it.
The official blog carries a work-in-progress disclaimer: details are subject to change before release. Thresholds, cooldowns, battery life and loot sources all stay in that category until the 1.30 client is live.
Damage and repair: why attachment matters
The durability rule is one sentence with a large consequence: the lock "can be damaged if it is not attached to a door," and a damaged lock is repaired "with electronic kits." As long as it is attached to a door, Bohemia says it "should be indestructible."
A lock sitting loose in a truck bed or a stash is a normal item that can take damage. A lock bolted to a door is not a raid target at all, which pushes attackers toward the door, wall or frame — and that matters more in Nasdara, where roughly 20 wrecked-house variants across more than 5,000 rebuildable structures can be restored with wood, planks, metal sheets, or the new trowel-and-brick route. It matters for legacy bases too: the lock mounts on existing fences, so a Chernarus compound built from vanilla gates gets the same protection.

The mod conflict nobody has answered yet
Plenty of modded servers already run the community Code Lock mod, and Bohemia has said nothing about how the official lock and that mod behave when both are installed. Writing for server operators, low.ms puts it directly: nobody has said a word about coexistence, so assume nothing, watch the mod's Workshop page between now and launch, and be ready to drop one of the two.
A second risk sits on top of it, and this one is official. The 1.30 Experimental post of 16 September warned modders they "might encounter problems with animation-related mods," because the animation systems were reworked for the motorbikes and the new infected attacks. 1.30 is a major version, and every DayZ server updates on October 15 whether or not it ever loads Nasdara — the lock arrives inside a patch already flagged as disruptive to mod lists.
- Modded server: decide before launch whether the official lock replaces the community mod, or whether you keep the mod and ignore the official item. Bohemia will not decide it for you.
- Vanilla-plus server: the official lock is the first keypad with controller support, so Xbox Series X|S and PS5 players get base security they never had.
- Either way: keep your mod list and versions written down off the panel so you can tell what broke on the day.
Until Bohemia publishes a compatibility statement, a server running the community Code Lock mod and the official 1.30 lock is an untested combination. Plan for one or the other, and see how to host a Badlands server for the 1.30 prep checklist.

FAQ
Can you break a combination lock in DayZ? On the vanilla dial lock, community reports describe guessing through the discs with no in-game penalty, and the wiki lists it as irrepairable — there is no official crack action. The 1.30 code lock is built the other way: attached to a door it is described as indestructible, and wrong PIN attempts trigger escalating protection.
Does the code lock work on Chernarus and Livonia, or only Nasdara? Every map. Dev Blog Recap (1) confirms it "will be available on all other maps," so legacy servers get it with the 1.30 update on October 15, 2026.
What happens when the battery dies? The lock stops working and unlocks automatically. Battery state is read on the back of the lock, indoors, so checking it becomes part of routine base maintenance.
Can a raider just shoot the lock off my door? Not according to the official blog: attached to a door it should be indestructible. A detached lock can be damaged, and you repair it with electronic kits.
Will the official lock break my server's Code Lock mod? Nobody has said. No official statement covers running both, so the safe pre-launch call is to plan for one or the other.
